Answer-Concerning Mary

in the Christian Faith

Mary is often called “the mother of God” because she gave birth to Jesus Christ. Because she was a virgin, conceived by the Holy Spirit, and brought forth a child who indeed is God in the flesh, many want to give her great honour, even worship her, because of it. Many pray to Mary, thinking it’s a way to honour Jesus Christ, but this teaching is only rooted in religion and in human reasoning. But what does God say, and what does He require? Let us consider some things:

It was prophesied that a virgin would give birth to a son, the Redeemer, about 1,500 years before it took place by an Old Testament prophet named Isaiah.

CLICK-Isaiah 7:14
The verse tells us why it was to be a virgin birth, it was for a sign. If a married woman or a non-virgin had a child it would not be a sign, but God wanted to do it in a miraculous way, so people would know that He was the one doing it and that they could thereby identify the Savior. The virgin was not for us to worship her but for us to identify the Messiah. We would not have had any way to recognize that Jesus was God and the Savior of the world had it not been for the virgin birth.

There is a passage in the Scriptures that describes a conversation between Elizabeth and Mary, and in this conversation they identify Jesus as Lord, and Mary identifies Him as her God and her Savior.
CLICK-Luke 1:41-50,

CLICK-Matthew 12:50 records the words of Jesus, and this is what He says, “For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.” Also in John chapter 2 Jesus directly answered to her as “Woman” not “Mother.”
The Scriptures record the words of Jesus when He was on the cross, and we see that Mary is identified as the mother of Jesus, for she did bear Him in her womb, but again Jesus referred to her as “Woman.”

CLICK-John 19:26, 27, “When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.”

The first couple of God’s ten commandments demand that we do not worship anything or anyone other than God Himself.
CLICK-Exodus 20:3-5, “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me.”

Even the angels did not receive worship.
CLICK-Revelation 19:10, “And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See [thou do it] not: I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

CLICK-Luke 1:42, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”
Mary surely was a blessed woman, but many other people were blessed who are recorded in the Scriptures, like David, Abraham, all that receive Jesus as their personal Savior, and many godly people throughout history have been blessed by God in special ways. We should respect and honor Mary, but to do anything more than that is not of God. The Bible never says that we are to pray to Mary, or even include her, in any way, in our worship or belief of the faith. It is just religious practices, not of God.

Mary had many children after Jesus, so to identify her as a virgin still is false. CLICK-Matthew 13:55, 56 says, “Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”
Why would people get so focused on Mary? It is religion, it is idolatry, it is deception and not of God. People who know Jesus as their Saviour and have a true relationship with God don’t do that, they know that Mary was only used as an instrument for bringing about God salvation through Jesus Christ.
